Report from Westmoreland Cultural Trust

-3 HVAC units purchased and installed(2 servicing theatre, 1 storefront)

-New Primary Ductwork purchased and installed

-Old roof trusses removed and replaced with code compliant roofing trusses

-New roof

-Interior excacation and general demolition

-All new rough plumbing installed

-New electrical runs throughout facility

-New electric panel

-Audio equipment(speakers, amplifiers, mixer)

-Movie screen

-Auditorium seats

-Facade grant of $15,000

When the hotel caught on fire, the firemen had no choice but to go on the Lamp roof to fight the fire. In doing so, they moved equipment across the roof and punctured the new roof in approximately 25 places. All of the punctures have been repaired. Also, new seals on the roof edges were repaired.

Further, firemen protocol is to cut all power to the buildings, which they did. As they poured water on the hotel, the water runoff went into the Lamp and flooded it. Because the power was off, the newly installed sump pumps were not operational. As a result, we lost the newly installed electrical panel, which has not been replaced yet. All other miscellaneous water damage has been rectified.

As a side note, a question that always pops up is the insurance for this situation. As it turns out, the hotel was underinsured. The Trust insurance, due to the circumstances, only covered a small portion of specific items. Given the situation, we chose not to pursue the hotel owner.

State and county money ($250,000 each) lined up; WCT to secure bids before Irwin will commit

First goal: raise awareness

  • Distribute flyers at Memorial Day parade: Meet at Lamp under marquee at 9:30 am on Monday, May 30, 2011
  • Design logo and tee shirts
  • Website, email address, Facebook page, twitter account
  • YouTube video (show as trailer before movies-in-the-park?)

Second goal: façade cleanup

  • Date to be determined
  • Labor: consider North Irwin VFD Jr. firefighters, scout troops
  • Ideas include floral planters, painting (including mural?), new window display (progress report, popcorn machine, mannequins)
  • Must coordinate with both Westmoreland Cultural Trust and Irwin Public Works

Third goal: fundraising

  • Determine where to keep money raised (what type of account)
  • Ideas include naming rights, benefit concert, vote on first movie to show at new Lamp for a donation

Next meeting date to be determined; approximately two weeks.

  1. I’d hate to see something as corporate as naming rights applied to something as historic as the lamp. I would personally suggest that a campaign be run to name seats. $50 (whatever is feasible) be donated to get a supporters name on a chair. I’d guess that a lot of Irwin residents would love to have a hand in getting the theatre back open and could really help to raise involvement and awareness at the same time.

  2. That’s just the sort of creativity we need! Any chance you can make this Wednesday’s meeting? It’s at Randy’s Barber Shop at 6:30 pm. Hope to see you there!
